U.S. workers take rare Canadian jobs

.
BC Mary comment:  While Christy was touring around British Columbia announcing her jobs, jobs, jobs strategy, I don't recall hearing her mention this problem ... Thanks to "Gary E" who forwarded this eye-popping column from Kitimat Daily detailing the situation where U.S. workers are given priority over Canadians in hiring for the jobs available at Alcan in Kitimat, B.C. ...

U.S. Workers take rare  Canadian Jobs

Excerpt:

Today the Globe and Mail is quoting John Les (now Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier of BC Clark) [what?!!] with this statement on employment:

"Everybody is looking for work around home, but (they) may not be aware that there are jobs available in Kitimat or in Terrace or Fort St. John. That's not for everybody, but if you're a young person looking for a job, maybe horizons need to be expanded a bit,"

Really?  There are jobs in Kitimat but from all reports to get one and get fair benefits of the employment at the dismantling of the Smelters
at the Rio Tinto Alcan site you need to be an American.   Canadians are being mistreated and for every one Canadian hired at least three are from as far away as Florida.

For three months the Terrace Daily has been receiving calls from Canadian residents; those living in Terrace, Kitimat and the lower mainland complaining about the treatment and the excessive American
hiring practices while locals seem to be sidestepped or mistreated to such an extent they quit ... to continue readi

Foreign worker protection urged

By Matthew McClure,
Calgary Herald - September 9, 2011

A new report by a Tory parliamentary assistant calls for better protection of temporary foreign workers in Alberta from exploitation by unscrupulous recruiters. But Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk balked Tuesday at committing his government to tighter regulations for an industry that brought close to 25,000 workers into the province last year. "I will be definitely promoting upgrading and strengthening the law surrounding the entire industry of recruiting and attracting workers over here," Lukaszuk said at a Calgary press conference where the report was released.

"I would be very presumptuous at this point in time to tell you that it will pass the floor of the house." Government documents show that almost three-quarters of Alberta businesses employing temporary foreign workers inspected by the province two years ago were breaking labour standards. Most of the violations were for failing to pay overtime or a premium for work on statutory holidays.

Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, said he is disappointed the province isn't following Manitoba's lead in requiring employers to have a good compliance history with employment standards and workplace safety laws before registering to employ foreign workers. That province also requires recruiters to be licensed as immigration consultants and prohibits them from charging workers fees for finding a job.

Comments:
Not surprising the BC people won't get the work, dismantling the smelters. We also won't get the work, from Enbridge pipeline. They have their own skilled pipe layers and Engineers.

That's why I said, pee on the Enbridge pipeline and the dirty oil tankers from China. BC takes all the risk for nothing in return. They will try and con the First Nations People saying, they will have work on the pipeline. Right now the First Nations People are holding firm, on rejecting the dirty tankers and the Enbridge pipeline.

I'm not sure how many of the seven mines going up, in northern BC are American. They too will employ their own people first.

The BC citizens, will never benefit from our vast natural resources, what-so-ever. We have been totally sold out.

The Campbell/Clark BC Liberals, blatantly lied about jobs for the BC citizens. Like they lied, the HST would provide jobs.

Actually I'm not all that surprised, the Americans are being given our jobs. Their behavior towards the Kitimat citizens, doesn't surprise me either.

Canadians took them into their homes and provided them with food and shelter, during 9/11. We have taken their side, and went to war for them. We considered the U.S. people, as our friends and neighbors. However, that they treat the people in Kitimat like dirt, is inexcusable. What about your job plans Christy? Were your job plans for the American citizens, rather than BC people?

I believe Canada is going to be the largest state in the U.S. Harper has been giving Canada away, as fast as he can.

Canadians own nothing of value in this country. We are foreign owned.

A phrase I have not heard for a while comes to mind. That phrase is tinpot democracy.

There should be absolutely no importing of labor in this country until or unemployment rate hits ZERO.

This story doesn't surprise me in the least...in fact...I believe it's going to get much worse! There will be a massive influx of American workers - with the attitude that they're doing us a favor by being here. And we know that no one pulls "attitude" like an American.

There's a mine going up here in Kam, one letter writer to the paper has asked numerous times for the company to reassure the people here that the jobs will go to local, then BC, then Canadian workers. The company's silence has been deafening. Not one word of assurance. Nothing.
To make matters more interesting - there are people here in the liberal stranglehold called Kamloops...that actually believe it's ok to hire foreigners over home-growns! After all - they'll be buying homes and spending their money here too, right? Right??

Fuhreakin' Idiots!!!

.
OK, Leah m'dear,

Your homework assignment is to write six (6) letters to editors, bloggers, relatives, or passing strangers ...

repeating that diligent Kamloopian who puts the question right out there:

reassure the people that the jobs will go to local, then BC, then Canadian workers

Then maybe re-read the thoughts of Bridgette DePape on where our power is. OK?

And a big hug from me, for caring so much.

Such a great article it was which jobs available in Kitimat or in Terrace or Fort St. John.
