The day to watch: 18 September 2006

Pre-trial motions begin in B.C. Supreme Court on 18 September 2006 to argue the need for more disclosure in the case against Dave Basi, Aneal Basi, and Bob Virk, who are facing corruption charges.

The trial is scheduled for 4 December 2006, a full 3 years after police made their shocking raid on the B.C. Legislature.

Dave (Udhe) Basi and Bob Virk face several charges, including accepting a bribe, influence peddling, fraud, and breach of trust. Aneal Basi faces two charges of money laundering.

Judge: Elizabeth Bennett (presided at the famous Back Porch trial)
Special Prosecutor: Bill Berardino
Defence Lawyers: Michael Bolton, Kevin Doyle, Kevin McCullough.

It is expected that two witnesses will testify for the prosecution: Erik Bornman and Brian Kierans.

It is not known at this time whether the former Cabinet Ministers for whom the accused worked, will be called to testify.

Comments:
Kevin Doyle used to be a member of the Liberal Party of BC. He attended the '92 provincial convention in Victoria at the peak of Gordon Wilson's career. The next biggest star from that group of 17, was Gary Farrell Colins. Also kind of interesting ... dragged by his parents, this was a 16yr old Eric Bornman's first political convention. TT.

Verrry interesting. This is great information. Wouldn't it be great to get inside Kevin Doyle's head and look out at the world through his eyes right now ... what would he think of Gary Collins?

And you say he "used to be a member of the Liberal Party of B.C." so does that mean he was a genuine Liberal and gave up when Gordon Campbell took over? Or what?

There was a Michael Doyle who was charged after the Legislature Raids -- conspiracy to traffic drugs. Oh, to get our hands on one of those Public Access Computers, eh? I mean, are the trials over? What were the decisions, the implications?

zkxbemDamn. I wanted to delete the duplicated message above. But it seems that I've activated an enabling function requiring approval of the blog author ... sheesh.

What's worse, I found 7 perfectly healthy comments stuck behind the scenes ... and released them ... or so I had thought ... now this! ... plz bear with me.

I don't know of any specific relationship between these guys, but I do know that Kevin Doyle fadded away from politics in the early '90s. I'd be really interested to find out who's picking up the tab on the legal bill. This isn't a cheap defence. Between the PR, PI, and law firms involved...I guess the bill could be close to $500,000. Anyways, something to look into. TT

Me too. That's a huge whack of cash to come up with. After-tax cash, at that, if it's legitimately earned.

And if the 3 accused are found Not Guilty, guess who will get the bill, eh?
